A note about the name of the blog

A friend I was speaking to yesterday advised me that the name of my blog was way too dark.

As you know, I can do dark, but only if it's funny.

Since he missed the fact that "mast" is a play on mastectomy (and the fact that I am having one on one side of my body - half mast) I thought some of the rest of you might like an explanation too.

The metaphor about flags at half mast is not about death, but about the loss of the boob. Same with the pictures of cake boobs.

The "flappin at" part just brought the boob / flag imagery into what I thought of as more hilarious / ridiculous territory.

I am breaking a cardinal rule of anyone who went to art school in de-obfuscating my artistic and linguistic choices in this way, but I wanted no doubts among you that my tongue was anywhere but firmly in my cheek.

Let's hope I never have to have that part cut off.

  1. this reminds me of a story of a friend who was very ill. We were using a thread in a discussion forum called "V is sick!" and we used the thread for updates for a long time. I finally created a new thread called "V is healing" because I thought it was a better concept for us all to be thinking. Turns out that she loved the old thread because she always added in her head "and twisted!" :)

I love your blog no matter the name, although I must admit that some of the nuances escaped me.
